Hp Officejet 4200 Series Software For Mac

I am having a problem getting a new HP Deskjet F4280 to print. When I send a document to print, all the normal functions happen from selecting the number of copies, etc, and the print progress bar shows up and fills in but it never prints. The jobs completed shows whatever I send as completed with the time and date.

I can get the Deskjet to Scan and Copy from the computer controls. I tried to find updated drivers at Apple.com for this printer but they are only there for OSX 10.5. I have done the all steps HP online assistance has suggested but, do not have a solution yet. I have loaded the latest OSX drivers from the HP site and installed them. Startech usb vga drivers for mac. If I use the Printer Setup Utility to try to install it as a HP printer I am unable to find drivers, I presume because the printer is not listed (old listing of printers) I have now used the generic printer option in the Printer Setup Utility and have found I have a driver version 10.4 and PPD file version 1.0 listed. I go to 'about this Mac' and look at the printer option, I now have installed: Deskjet F4200 series: Status: Idle Print Server: Local Driver Version: 10.4 Default: Yes URI: usb://HP/Deskjet F4200 series?serial=CN8882D3VP05BR PPD: Generic PostScript Printer PPD File Version: 1.0 PostScript Version: (2000.0) 1 Can anyone tell me if this is the correct driver version I should have? Any idea what I need to do to get the printer to print?

BDAqua, Thanks for coming to the rescue again! Since you defer to Greg, I'm going to work with him. Yes, the current download from HP is what I have been using. Greg, I have done what you suggest again but have the same problem.

When attempt to print I get directed to the Printer Setup Utility. The Series 4200 printer is listed, which I select as the printer to use. During the selection process, I am unable to add this printer as a HP. It comes down to the place where I'm asked to 'select a driver or printer' Because the Utility is not up to date, the Series 4200 printer is not listed. The only way I can add the printer is work around to get to the 'Generic' selection which adds the Driver Version 10.4.0 (probably the OSX instead of a driver) and PPD File Version 1.0.

With the Generic setting, I select a document to print, the software goes through the select the number of copies etc. I select print and the progress bar appears, fills in and nothing happens. Is there a way to find the printer drivers that have been installed to maybe find a way to get them as the selected drivers? The HP Tech sent me a long list of procedures deleting all references to HP and then reinstalling the current drivers from the HP website. Same results. I do not have a OSX 10.4 install and repair disc to run but I have run the fsck check from the Single User mode and it was OK.

This MDD came with TechTool Pro4 installed which I have run with no problems showing up. Plus the previous printer was working fine until it's power supply died. OK, so I 'think' you're installing driver version 9.7.1?

    - Yes In Print & Fax/Printer Setup, are you clicking on Default - which gives the default browser? - That's the main problem I think anyway. I cannot get the Print Browser selection window within the Printer Setup Utility to accept this printer so I can make it the default printer.

    Hp Officejet 4200 Printer Driver

If I go to the HP selection list, the Series 4200 or the drivers are not listed so I can't select the default printer. If I try the 'Other' selection I am taken to my Documents folder and can get to all the other folders but I cannot find the printer and drivers in any subfolder. And the printer is connected by USB? Yes, I know that is working correctly as the install 9.7.1 program identifies the printer and gives the serial number when plugged in and turned an as directed Again - 'generic' won't be useful in any way.

I have found that to be very true. I don't understand what 'the utility is not up to date' means here. What I mean is that when I select to 'add a printer' I'm taken to the 'Print Browsed ' window where I hi-light the 4200 Series printer and make that selection. The Print Browser window tels me I have selected that printer and that is located at G4 (??? I am then asked to select the printer or driver from the list provided in the drop down listings. I go to HP and the Series 4200 printer is not listed. Have you repaired permissions?

(Disk Utility in Utilities) - Yes, every time I reinstall the 9.7.1 program. COULD the problem be that the printer is located at G4 instead of the Hard Drive? Just to make sure can you tell me how can I change the location to the Hard Drive?

Thanks Ron G4-867-DP. The computer name 'G4' was established from the previous owner who had reset the computer. There is no other connection or anything else involved other than a direct USB from the printer to the computer. Below is from 'about this computer' Machine Name: Power Mac G4 Machine Model: PowerMac3,6 CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1) Number Of CPUs: 2 CPU Speed: 1 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB Memory: 1 GB Bus Speed: 167 MHz Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2 Serial Number: XB2.MMA Sales Order Number: M8689LL/A. Greg, Download the Combination Updater from Apple, use it to re-Update OS X. Did that, no change.

I do not have the PowerMac OS X 10.4 install and restore disc so I cannot run the repair. I would like to buy a copy if I could find one. I do have TechTool Pro 4 installed that I have run and it finds no errors. I do not understand why a repair would be needed when I have been printing with a Lexmark until there was a problem with it's internal power and it would not turn on. I hooked the HP printer to a PC, loaded the install and it worked perfectly. Could you tell me how to find the V9.7.1 drivers on the hard drive so I can attempt to install the printer with the 'other' option? I have looked for HP driver in the Macintosh Hard Drive using the spotlight search.

I find the old Lexmark Drivers but no HP drivers listed. There are also a couple USB drivers but that is it. Since they are not listed where the other drivers are located, are they even installed? The HP folder with the command functions part of V9.7.1 is installed OK. Thanks for helping with this! The 'Other' menu choice is for selecting a PPD file (postscript printer description = standard way CUPS uses to identify all printers and which driver goes with them). PPD files are found in: /Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/resources/en.lproj and: /usr/share/cups/model the ones in en.lproj are gzipped and have cryptic names.

I use TextWrangler for opening and looking at them - it gunzips them automatically. If you don't recognize the model number, use the Terminal to ls -al and compare saved dates to find it. Other driver components are found in /Library/Printers/hp. The only drivers in the Library/Printers/PPD's were for the previous Lexmark printer.

I didn't find the '/usr/share/cups/model' but did a search and found 5 listings that were installed in 2005. Under the hp folder I'm not sure what I'm looking for but the only thing I found were under the Frameworks listings of Crossbow, Interlaken, Matterhorn and Resourse where there were Versions listed. I guess I'll finally give up and change over to Leopard 10.5.

If the HP Tech doesn't come up with something in the next reply. Greg, thanks for the help! Apple Footer.
